Former South African professional tennis player Robbie Koenig believes age might play a huge role in Roger Federer winning another Grand Slam title. While the South African doesn’t doubt the level of play and enthusiasm the Swiss master has or the game, he believes Father Time has caught up with him and it could play a huge factor in him winning his 18th Grand Slam title.

Koenig stated that Federer still believes he can win another Grand Slam title and he mentioned that when someone has been as successful and done so much as Roger, he is in the right to believe in his capabilities to win another major title. But he mentioned that there comes a time in a professional tennis player’s life when he crosses the age of 30, he gets off days and on those days, more often than not, he loses which wouldn’t have been the case in his prime.

Federer made a blistering start to the new season, notching up his 1000th win as a professional player. But in spite of going into the Australian Open as a top contender, he managed to lose to Andreas Seppi, suffering a shock exit in the third round.

Federer last played a Grand Slam final was a loss at his favourite Wimbledon to Novak Djokovic in 2014. Koenig believes the Swiss Maestro’s record of 17 Grand Slam wins is safe from the clutches of Rafael Nadal with players believing more and more in their ability to beat the Spaniard.

He thinks that Djokovic is the one to watch out for over the next few years but even then, he doesn’t think the Serbian can overtake the record that Federer has amassed so far. But as a tennis fan, the ATP Tour commentator would love to see FedEx win another title.
